New Zealand Christmas Trees.
New Zealand Christmas Trees or Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa ) can bee seen flowering at this time of the year in the more Northern regions of NZ. The ones in the photo are on our driveway. We have several areas on the property with these lovely trees and they are all a little different, some lighter colour, some darker and they don't all do their thing at once so we are able to enjoy them for several weeks.
When we finished work last evening we got in the truck and drove around the orchard shelter belts till we found a suitable branch of Cryptomeria to cut and bring inside for our Christmas tree.( it has that lovely fir tree smell and will last well.) Here it is with just the light strung on it. Decorations still to be added.

Very neat trees. It is so much fun to see how others celebrate this Holiday Season.
ReplyDeletePretty tree! Looks almost 'fluffy' if you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing a shelter belt is like a hedgerow or windbreak? Trees and shrubs allowed to grow between fields?
oh that's interesting, I have been labouring under a misapprehension for years! We were sold a Murraya Exotica many years ago and told it was called a New Zealand Christmas tree! I love them and have always made sure we have one in the garden wherever we live. Even in our teeny postage stamp of a town garden now, we have 3! I love the profusion of white flowers at this time of year, and the berries that follow. But I must say the real McCoy is also stunning! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a FRUITFUL New Year.
ReplyDeleteYes you are right Forest Jane, they are a line of trees planted to break the wind ( filter it, not stop it )around the orchard blocks.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful natural looking landscape along your driveway. Love the metrosideros excelsa. I have planted several at my coastal garden on Kangaroo Island, South Australia but it will be quite a few years til they achieve the glory of yours. Congratulations and Seasons Greetings.
ReplyDeletewonderful pohutakawa trees - thanks
